Initial shot placement
This is our initial shot placement. This is used to help us
plan where we are going to put certain performance, narrative or concept shots.
Our song is mainly split in to two parts. The first part is the showing that
the artist doesn’t want to conform to society, while the second part is what
the artist sees as her Eden and how they clash. This will hopefully keep the audience
intrigued with our music video, so they can watch all of it without getting
bored. The song lyrics at some parts are very repetitive, but the music that
goes with it changes throughout the song making it different each time. This is
where we will like to place our concept shots as it will keep the video
interesting.
From creating this, it will be really helpful when our group
is at the post production stage, because then we know roughly where certain
types of shots should be placed. However, this will also help with the shooting
schedule because, we know what order we should film, so we shall film the first
part first, this will make the placing the shots easier on the editing software
because, we can sort out that part first to when we are happy, or to see if we
need to go back and re film.
Research on Costume
This is our first
research on the costume that we are going to use within our video. We defiantly
wanted her to wear white as this will make her stand out from everyone and it
represents the purity in her that she doesn’t what to conform to society. We
decided that one outfit was going to be a long flowy dress with flowers. This
will be used in the London filming area because, this will make her stand out
more and really emphases her star image. This will then juxtapose with her
second outfit of a white short dress with gold accessorise. This will be used
in the tea part shots because, it we will that she has more freedom and is less
covered up. The gold is used to make her look more modern, and it is very bold which reflects her character.
Research on Props
This is my first type of research on the main props that we
will use within our video. The three
main props are animal masks, powder paint and teacups. These all symbols that
will represent the main theme of the music video, which is not wanting to
conform to society. This is a message
that we want to be very clear so we need to make sure that all of our
mise-en-scene always links back to this theme. Props are very important to
think about because, it will add to what the artist is about. For example the
tea cups will be vintage to help give more of a star image for her.

Creating our star image
From thinking up what are artist is going to be like, it
will be easier for us to develop her more with what she looks like and how she
will act, throughout the music video. This will hopefully make marketing easier
because, we know how we can market her to her target audience, for example she
is a nature lover which means that she will be more appealing to hippies and
such. From her style this links into with her personality because she is very
relaxed her style is effortless. This means that when we plan with what she is
wearing it needs to all be linked back with what she is like as a person and
what her general style is. Her inspirations were very important because, it
shows where she has come from and what show wants to develop like. This is
something that should be thought of overtime as the artist develops and
matures.

Research on Hairstyles
This is the first hair tutorial that I looked at for our
hairstyle. I liked this a lot as braids are really good for the boho look and
really emphases her indie look. This is something that we defiantly want to get
across to our audience. This makes it important make sure that are star image
is created. This is something I can do myself which means it will be easy to do
on our artist.
This is another braid inspired hair style. This would be a good style because, it is
another boho look which will emphases her style to the audience, and it will
suit the artist really well.
This is the simplistic style of hair that we can do with no straighteners
or anything. This means that if we cannot do the others then we can defiantly
do this one.
These are all a mixture of pictures that would be really
good for our hair styles. Flowers will be a key theme throughout or performance
which means that her hair will hair flower bands in them, which will all add to
her star image.
Research on Make-up
This is a very detailed tutorial for the type of make-up
that we wanted, as it explains what type of make-up we need and the shade and
it shows us how to apply it. This will be really useful when we have to do our
artists make up. This will make her look more believable as the artist.
This is another example of how we want our make up for the
artist. This video seems a lot simpler which means that if we can not to the
other one the we have another way that we can fall back on, making sure that we
get the style that we want.
These are a mixture of photos that show what we want our
artist to look like. Dark eyes and dark lips, but the rest is very natural. This is the boho look that the artist will
have overall, and these pictures will give a good example of what our artist
should look like in the end.
Audience Questionnaire For Artist Name
For us to come up with the best name for our artist, we made
a short questionnaire, where we asked our target audience three question;
1.
Do you think an artist’s name is important?
2.
When looking at our artist, which names do you
feel suits her the most? (we held up a picture of our artist, and the names
that they had to choose from were, Luna Lux, Ivory Rose and Nylar Rose)
3.
What type of music genre do you think she
creates when hearing her name?
We found out that an artist’s name is very important as it
can attract the audience to come listen to her and invites them in. The most liked name was Luna Lux as it was
very different and suited the artist the most. This was really important to us,
as we wanted to make it as believable as we could. Lastly her name
automatically links in with the music that she creates as well, which will also
help to attract listeners.
Research on Location
This is a collage of Regents Park in London. We thought that
this would be a really good place to film some shots for our video because; it’s
in the main city where society likes to wonder about. This means by having are
artist there she will stick out more and the song is about not wanting to
conform to society which means that this message will be more obvious to the
audience. Also as it autumn the colours on the trees will be a nice orange/ red
colour which would juxtapose with her dress nicely making her stand out. This
park is very nature based so there will be lots of flowers and lakes where we
can get good shots, where her star image will be created to show that she is
very nature based.
These pictures are a mixture of Bond Street, Oxford Street,
Regent Street and Embankment. These are possible locations for us to film our
time lapse shot where she has people who are confining to society around her,
and she will be in the middle wearing completely different clothes showing that
she wants to get out. This would be good places as they are very popular which
means there will be loads of people around to make sure the shot looks good. The
problem with this location is that people may react weirdly to being filmed
which could ruin the shot.
Lastly this is a picture of the schools swimming pool, this
is because we wanted to see if we could do some underwater shots or her laying
on top of the water. This would add to her star image of being nature based.
The problem that we are having is that we wanted a pool that without any titles
or lines on the bottom, this would help to make the shots look more believable
and professional. From looking at different pools this could be a possibility of
filming here, but it would mean that editing this show would be harder to make
it look dark and the way that we want it to.

zella day lip sync
This is the lip sync with the person that we would like to
be our artist. This is because we think that she really suits the role of the
star that we created. We decided to practice the song with her, to see what we
need to work on with her before we started to film, to make sure that she didn’t
mess up on the day. This will help to make sure that the video will flow well
and it looks like she actually is singing it.
From practicing this I saw that we need to practice her pronouncing
the words to make it look believable. Also I saw that she needed to learn the
lyrics of the song more to make sure that it looks fluid. Also she smirks too
much which is something that we want to avoid in the video as it wouldn’t suit
the tar image, she will have to be more serious. Lastly I think that her mouth
needs to be more relaxed when she sings because, at the moment it looks very
stiff and uncomfortable which something that the artist shouldn't look like is.
Ideas of Eden
From talking to our target audience they didn't quite understand what the song meant by Eden, so I looked up all the words that are associated with the word to help bring ideas into my head about playing on this idea that we can put into our video. From looking at all these different words most of them are based around nature, which would give our music video a naturist vibe. This is something that we want to go for as it means that the theme throughout the song will be there which will hopefully help the audience to understand what is meant by Eden.

Audience Reactions to Lyrics
We went round to our target audience and asked them when
reading the lyrics what do they think it means. Most of them replied with the
answer of a person trying to run away and doesn’t want to conform to society.
This means that when creating the music video this message needs to be very
obvious, so the audience can understand the video better.

Analysis of song lyrics
We found analysing these lyrics to be very hard as, we found
many different references to the song that we didn’t know the meaning to.
From what we could understand without the researching was
the song is about someone who is trying to find paradise, hence to the
repeating lyrics of “To find East of Eden”.
We found out that this book has links with the book by john Steinbeck
called “East of Eden” which has themes of freedom, acceptance, and guilt. This
was changed into a film in 1955 with James Dean. It is about a man who gives in
to his temptations for a woman that his brother is seeing. This relates to the
story of Cain and Able from the book of Genesis. In this story Cain was sent to
be exiled in the Land of Nod and East of Eden is a location within it.
Overall we understood that the song was about not wanting to
confine to society rules. As the song is about trying to escape and not wanting
to be trapped anymore “Keep me from the cages under the control” the “Control”
links to the society and how they control/ confine people to act a certain way.
However the Land of Nod can also be referred to the mythical
land of sleep “Go off to the land of Nod” plays with the phases “nod off” if we
then link this back to not wanting to be confined to society the song could
mean that the only way out of the control is to sleep, which could be seen as
to suicide. The East of Eden could be seen as reaching Heaven after killing
yourself.

Audience Questionnaire
From looking at our feedback from the audience questionnaire, it has showed me different details that will help me create the artist. From looking at the answers we found out that for people in the age range of 15-18 mostly listen to pop/indie/Hip Hop. This was helpful because the genre of our song is indie which means we now know who the target audience is for our music video and who to direct the artist to. What was important for when the audience looks for an artist is a good dress sense which is different from everyone else as these appeals to them more. Another point which I found interesting is that most people said that they like an artist that doesn’t take themselves too seriously. This is defiantly something that we should incorporate within our artist start image because; we do not want to make her look like a complete diva so audiences will not listen to her music.
A question that people found quite hard to answer was “What do you like about music videos” this is mainly because, they do not look for anything specific that they want to see, as this will make all the videos look the same. For the editing to be faced pace and tell a story came up a lot which shows that, for our music video to be good it needs something to hold it together, which mostly looks like a narrative. To make a music video interesting our target audience mostly said that it needs to be new and different for it to really entice them.
6/15 liked performance
5/15 like narrative
5/15 liked concept
As these results were very close means that we need to do more research on what more of our target audience will prefer as it is not very clear.
Most people find out about new music videos through music channels and social media, this is because, it is easier for them to check up on anything new that they can look at which will appeal to them. When we finish with our music video it means that to publish it we have to market it across all different social media that our audience will use.
For our target audience to keep in touch with our artist we found out that Instagram and Twitter are very popular for them to catch up with them. This means that we will have to create a Twitter page and a n Instagram page to make sure we can advertise her as an artist and widen her margin to place all over the world.
From this questionnaire was really helpful as it showed us they direction in which we have to go with are artist and ideas that we have. This is to make sure that we fully target our video to the right audience, which will lead to more sales of her music.

Working
on teachers feedback:
A target for our
group to do is more research on what our target audience preferred narrative is
because, from the results that we got was that they were all very close meaning
that we need to do more investigation on what is the preferred as this will help
with planning. A problem that I found was that the answers to questions 5 and 6
were very vague as they didn’t give much detail on what they actually liked
about music videos. This is important to us as we can find out what our target audience
actually likes to then be able to create a music video that they will enjoy.
This meaning that we need to interview more of our target audience as to why
they liked certain videos.
Moodboard of the song genre
I created a mood board about the genre of the song that we
are going to create. I decided to split them up into Mise-en-scene work as this
will help me more when it comes to planning for the video. The actors would be
late teenagers, and from the pictures that I had they look very different to a normal
everyday person. This shows that the actors in our video need to be able to
suit the look that we are going for. This will help the video to look more believable.
The lighting can be a mixture of bright and dark, as these contrast each other
very well which can help make some shots more meaningful and stand out more to
the audience. From the pictures that I have used light silhouettes seem to be
used a lot, or the project on to a screen. This looks like a defiant genre
convention that we should use within our video as it will help to show the audience
what genre this is. Makeup within this genre can also be very different at the
genre is more about the expression of the artist and what they want to look
like. As for our video we are going for a boho look then the typical convention
is dark eyes and a clean complication, this allows there to be more focus on
the eyes. The setting is mostly at fields, beach, woods or underwater. The sense
that I get from this is that it is very involved with nature. This is the vibe
that my group want to get throughout our video. The props used seem to be very naturist
as well for example unusual flowers and cacti. The costume within this gene is
very important as it is how the artist expresses themselves and not caring what
other people think. The style that we are going for is alternative and boho and
the pictures show what type of things that our artist needs to wear.
Overall from making this it has been really helpful as it
has given me a feel of what needs to be expected when planning and filming. But
overall when we have finished editing the footage we can compare it to the mood
board and see if we get the same vibes from it.

Moodboard for artist- Zella Day
This is a mood board of Zella Day the artist of the song that I have chosen to do. This shows the elements of her, for example her style is very boho with the long blonde hair with a flowy dress. This is something that the group will like to keep going with this theme as, this is what we image our artist to look like. This shows us the kind of vibe that the artist has made for her image, which is important to consider, which will help us to lead to us creating our own artists image. Also from looking at her social media it gave us an idea of who her target audience is.
Audience Reactions
The audience reaction to our song was really insightful as
it showed us who the target audience would be. For example when we got the
audiences to listen to the song the girls reacted more than the boys did. This
shows us without even asking a question that our target audience would be girls
in their late teens. All the girls were really positive with the beat of the
song which is something that we should incorporate with our editing as this
seems to be a big impacted to our audience. From asking the question who is the
song aimed at? They all agreed on the same age group of people which is late
teens, which makes our target audience definite, this will lead to us when
creating aspects of our video or digipak then we defiantly know who to aim it
at. However the genre of the song was a
little bit more difficult, as it wasn't totally obvious to everyone as they
came up with different ideas of what it was. Pop did come up which was what the
genre actually was, but the audience wasn't too sure which means when we plan
for our video we need to consider ways in which we can make the genre of the
song more obvious as the song doesn't automatically show what the song is. From
asking the question "What would you expect to see in the music
video?" this was helpful as we could see what the audiences could imagine
when listening to the song. We were given examples that we did think would be a
good idea, for example one said about having dry paint, we really liked having
this idea as we thought of ways in which we could link it to different
narratives that we have already thought about. Imagining the artist was helpful
as well because, they all came up with the same idea of what she should look
like. For example they saw her with dark long hair, very mellow and wearing
clothes that not everyone would wear.
This is something that we need to keep coming back to as
this was mostly our target audience, which means that any of our ideas need to
be kept linking back to them, for us to be able to create a video that will
attract the target audience so that the artist can sell their music
successfully.
Final Song Pitch
This is the pitch for out final song pitch. We want to
explain why we chose this song to create our music video to, which was “East of
Eden” by Zella Day. This song really applied to us as a group, as from
researching different genres, this genre of music is what we knew more about. We find that her voice has a unique touch to it making it sound less pop than other artists. We chose this song mainly due to the catchy beat, the artists vocals and the lyrics of the song. The lyrics are about 'The East Of Eden' and we feel as thought we could really play with the lyrics of the song and the genre, creating individuality compared to the other artists within the genre.
From out feedback from our target audience influenced our
decision because, when we went round asking people what they thought of it all
of it was a good response which meant that they would likely watch our video. Also
we asked them what they could imagine for the video and they gave us some
really good example that we could use, like power paint as this could represent
freedom and creativity which is something that we want our artist to be known
for in the video.
This is the song that we are going to do.

Editing with Slow Motion
Changing the speed of a shot I thought was going to be quite
hard but, from working out how it how now become easier to make it go faster
and slower. This again was a type of editing that I wanted to use within our
music video as it makes the footage look more interesting towards our target audience.
Hopefully this would make them more intrigued to watch the rest of the video
and enjoy it. The slowest I made a shot was 20% and the fastest was 300%. This
helped me get a wide idea of what each percentage was going to look like. I can
now apply this to the post production side to the video as I can see what
percentage would be the most suitable for the shot.
